Those who preferred online shopping pointed to advantages including better product ranges and special deals.

A large percentage of those surveyed expressed the opinion that the in-store shopping experience deteriorates during the Christmas shopping season. As might be expected, crowded stores were a major reason. Those who felt the in-store shopping gets worse during the Christmas shopping period also disliked long lines and a lack of store personnel.

Meanwhile, only a small percentage of those surveyed felt the online shopping experience worsened over during the Christmas season. Only 7 percent expressed that opinion.

96 percent of those surveyed plan to do at least some of their Christmas shopping online this year. A little less than half said they would do at least half of their shopping online.

The survey also reveals that online Christmas shopping is being done to an increasing degree on mobile devices, as opposed to desktop or laptop computers. 64 percent of shoppers who shop online plan to use the mobile devices to buy Christmas gifts. The trend towards shopping using smartphones and tablets has already been in evidence this year. 23 percent of online sales during the second quarter of this year were made using mobile devices. 34 percent of visits to shopping sites during that same period were made by people using their smartphones and tablets.

This represents a major change in online shopping trends. Just a few years ago less than one half of one percent of online sales were made by people using mobile devices. The trend suggests that smart retailers should pay special attention to their mobile offerings. Over half of the online shoppers surveyed said mobile website experiences had not met their expectations.
