Nearly Half of Online Shopping Research is Performed Exclusively On Mobile Devices
A recent study performed in 2013 by xAd and Telmetrics found that almost half of all consumer purchases and research is performed on smartphones.
The research suggests that consumers who use their mobile devices for online shopping are becoming significantly more frequent. Almost half of the consumers surveyed stated that they exclusively utilize mobile devices to research products. In fact, one out of every three people surveyed stated that they exclusively use smartphones for both research and purchase.
The study also found that consumers who mainly use PCs or laptops for online shopping will still involve their smartphone in the process in some manner.
Google performed a similar study in 2012 called the New Multi-screen World. The statistics were strikingly similar to the xAd study. The New Multi-screen World study found that sixty-five percent of searches online started on a mobile device.
One notable difference between the two studies was that the slightly older Google study found that sixty percent of the shopping related searches that began on a smartphone switched to a laptop when it was time to make the purchase. The more recent xAd study implies that this is no longer the case. People who begin searches online, finish them online. This suggests that the online purchasing trends may be changing at a faster rate than predicted. These findings stress the importance of ensuring your website is not only mobile friendly, but designed in a way which enables users to easily access important areas, such as contact pages or shop checkouts.
The xAd study found that fifty-seven percent of mobile consumers go to the brand’s website or mobile app to do their research and purchases. These numbers enforce the popularity of mobile as a web browsing platform and that future proofing your web presence is crucial for its success.
