Introducing the Mailchimp-Shopify Workaround

The Mailchimp for Shopify app has been removed from the Shopify app store following this statement from Mailchimp. If you had the app installed already, it will be revoked from May 12th (EST). There is as much speculation as you please around the reasons behind this breakup, ranging from each tech titan’s measured explanations to speculation on ulterior motives.

So what is your everyday Shopify/Mailchimp user meant to do under the feet of these scuffling giants? Mailchimp has provided a page that details workarounds for the lost integration, to a fine grain. In terms of apps to use, they recommend Zapier, Automate.io, or an app called ShopSync.

Of these recommendations, our preference is ShopSync.


What is ShopSync?

Shopsync (sometimes misspelled ShopSynch) is the Shopify Mailchimp replacement app. Essentially, it behaves the same way as the Mailchimp app behaved in Shopify.


It’s free (for the moment, at least), whereas Zapier and Automate.io will not let you use their free plans for Shopify integrations.

But the main reason is that this is what the old Mailchimp app interface looked like:




And this is what you get in ShopSync’s interface:




You can have exactly what you had before, no change, no loss.

Let’s take an in-depth look at what it’s like to use this app.

Importantly, the first thing you should do is disconnect any existing Shopify-Mailchimp integrations, i.e. the old app. If you don’t do this, it could cause issues around duplicate data being sent to Mailchimp.


Installing the ShopSync Shopify App


You install it directly from the Shopify app store, just as you would any other app. It has a decent rating thus far, I assume this will soon increase. There isn’t much information about where the app comes from. On the Privacy Policy of the app’s official website, shopsync.io, we can see they have a PO Box in Jefferson City, Tennessee.




For some reason, after you install it you get this message:




So just navigate to a different section and come back to the apps page and you’ll see ShopSync there. If the app doesn’t connect automatically, you should be able to initiate a pop-up where you authenticate Mailchimp, by clicking here:




From there, choose a list from the dropdown:

If you wish, enable Double Opt-In for new assignees to your list:

And define which data maps onto which merge tags:

Wait a few moments, and you will see something like this:

That’s it! At the bottom of the page, you can find all of the features you were used to in the old Mailchimp app, so make Order Notifications, Abandoned Cart emails, Product Retargeting emails, and Pop-up forms to your heart’s content.

Note that any communiqués from Mailchimp to your Shopify data will be applied retroactively. For example, if you create a new Abandoned Cart series using this app, pre-existing Abandoned Carts in Shopify will not receive an email- only those who abandoned a cart after you made the cart series will receive the email.

If something ever goes awry, be sure to press “Force Resync” at the bottom of the page to refresh the connection between Mailchimp and Shopify.

Can ShopSync send product information from Shopify to Mailchimp?

The answer is yes and no. Merge Tags can still be used when created Product Retargeting and Abandoned Cart emails (as per the templates in ShopSync), but in order to call products at-will from a Shopify store, you will need to create your own integration using MailChimp’s API.
