Increase your automation with Shopify’s new features

At Zyber, we’re all about using technology to make our clients’ lives easier, so they can focus their energy on creating growth. As a leading eCommerce agency, our Shopify experts are passionate about keeping up with the latest trends in order to help merchants excel within their eCommerce ecosystem.

Here are three of the latest updates for Shopify and Advanced merchants which will increase engagement, and remove the friction of manual processes through automation.

1. Shopify Customer Segmentation

Customer Segmentation is here to help Shopify merchants segment and engage with their customers on a whole new level. Merchants can create customer segments based on unique demographic, geographic, and shopping behaviours. These include location and lifetime value, and merchants can use pre-built templates or create custom groups. Once merchants have created these segments, they can create personalised, and highly-targeted marketing campaigns within the Shopify platform.

Migrating to customer segmentation

The Customer Segmentation feature will affect all Shopify merchants as it replaces the saved search function. For merchants who already had saved searches set up, these will now be converted to customer segments. The beauty of customer segmentation is the automation implemented to create dynamic groups. For example, if a new customer is acquired, they will automatically be added to any segments they qualify for. On the other hand, if a customer no longer matches a segment’s criteria, they will be removed. View the Customer Segmentation page on Shopify’s website to learn more about how the migration will impact your store.

2. Shopify Marketing Automations

Shopify Marketing Automations are available this month for merchants on the Basic plan or higher. They allow you to automate email campaigns through your Shopify store. There are also a range of pre-populated templates available based on your communication objectives, or alternatively, you can create your own workflows.

This feature is designed with the purpose of engaging with customers who are already subscribed to your brand’s marketing, rather than transactional emails. For example,  you can create Welcome, First Purchase Upsell, and Customer Winback campaigns. The great thing is these don’t count towards your Shopify email count! Here is an example of a customer winback template.

There are also additional apps in the Shopify app store you can use to create automations.

3. Implement automation with Shopify Flow

As of this month, Shopify Flow templates are now available on the advanced plan. Traditionally only available on Shopify Plus, the powerful feature is here to help merchants automate workflows. Automation is a great way to remove friction on repetitive tasks, and focus it on that all important business goal; growth.

Shopify Flow

If scaling your business is front of mind, Shopify Flow will completely transform how your online sales run. It’s efficient to implement, with a clear three-step process; you can set triggers (an event), conditionals (criteria for when the workflow will fire), and actions (carry out a task).

Examples of Shopify Flow

One of the great things about Shopify Flow is that it comes with a vast amount of ready-to-launch, template workflows that cover a lot of common automation gaps.

Here’s just a few of the business areas (and examples of actions) you can automate:

  • Buyer experience: Create a support ticket when you receive a negative review so your customer service team can reach out to the customer.
  • Customer management: Tag and track conversion of customers who order samples, or return orders.
  • Inventory and merchandising: Get notified when products are low in stock and set up automatic reorders to your vendors.
  • Risk management: Add high-risk orders for review by notifying your customer service team through a connector app.
  • Loyalty & retention: Segment customers based on lifetime spend, so your team can add loyalty rewards. Alternatively, you can start a win-back email sequence when customers are at risk.
  • Promotions: Text a discount code after a second order.
