Platforms like Shopify make it so easy for anyone to get into ecommerce, but it can be hard to know if you’re doing it right.

Especially when you see how many people are killing it on Facebook with dropshipping, or you see a random product begin trending – you might wonder to yourself, “what am I doing wrong?”

1. You didn’t do enough market research

It can be hard to know if you’re venture will be profitable, but it’s always well worth it to do some market research on your product, similar products, or similar industries. What’s trending at the moment? Are there a lot of people selling the same thing?

If there are many people selling your product or a similar version, that’s usually a good indicator that it sells well. But how will yours stand out against the rest?

It’s also important to address the consumer need or want that your product is filling. How will it help people?

Once you’ve looked at that, it’s time to look at every cost involved in selling the product. The cost to make the product, ship it, market it, and any listing fees or transaction fees.

Plus, it’s good to have a handle on how your competitors are doing in the same space.



2. You started with the wrong product

It can be hard to know what to start with first as you often just want to jump right in and get to selling!

But this can lead to your range being vague, cluttered, or overwhelming.

It’s suggested that you should start with just a few flagship products first. Based on how they go, you can start to add related products that can be cross sold, or even downsize your offerings


3. You’re selling on a bad ecommerce platform

With ecommerce being so easy to get into, a lot of people aim for the cheapest ecommerce platform out there to build their storefront.

But what they don’t know is the hassle involved with organising your own hosting, getting an SSL certificate, or being PCI compliant.

The cheaper options also lack a lot of features, options, and customisability. There are some that aren’t too flash if you’re wanting to work on the SEO of your store.

4. Re-evaluate your branding

Again, entrepreneurs just want to get things up and running as soon as possible. So in their haste they skimp on their logo, branding, and values. Which leaves them looking rather generic or unprofessional in their chosen space.

Some business owners choose generic colours for their business, or even worse – colours similar to their main competitors, eek! How will they be able to tell you a part?
